November Newness

A New Tune

Are the words of our mouth, which come from our heart, acceptable to God, our Savior and beneficial to others?  That is a very important question to ponder.  We do not have to read very long in scripture before we are given some instruction for the “tune” we carry.

Romans 12:1-2 provides the perspective and means for the thoughts which originate in our mind.  It is because we see God’s mercies we make our whole body (mind included) prepared to be acceptable to God.  It is through new thinking as we intentionally focus on knowing and doing God’s will the “tune” we carry becomes different than the world’s tune.

2 Corinthians 5 enables us to understand the body and life as we know it now in our skin and bones will be taken away.  However, what we do in our skin and bones now matters.  The text helps us with our “tune”.  We are reminded that we will stand before our Maker one day.  We will give account for what we’ve said and done. The reverence and fear of God we’ve had will be displayed.  The “tune” we’ve had regarding the acknowledgement of God’s supremacy will be evaluated and judged by God.  We are exhorted to carry a “tune” which persuades men to know and believe Christ.  The passage helps us understand the acceptable will of God is to be His ambassadors, be reconciled ourselves to God, and carry a “tune” which helps others be reconciled to God and be saved.

Psalm 96:1-4 gives specific instruction for the “tune” of God’s Salvation we should carry.

O sing unto the Lord a new song:

sing unto the Lord, all the earth.

Sing unto the Lord, bless his name;

shew forth his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory among the heathen,

his wonders among all people.

For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised:

he is to be feared above all gods.

As you “tune up” each day for the words you will say and the message you will carry forth, consider including the following:

  • Eternal thoughts and words (non-wordly/temporal)
  • Heartily approve of God and His ways
  • Proclaim God’s greatness  and His great acts
  • Reverent respect and awe of God

May God help us all to have a “new tune”.  May we have a tune that is both different than the world, fresh with the greatness of God, and useful to carry forth God’s message of salvation.

Additional Thoughts

Come, Thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy grace.  Streams of mercy never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above.  Praise the mount!  I’m fixed upon it, Mount of God’s unchanging love. ~Robert Robinson

Only one life, yes only one, Now let me say, ”Thy will be done”; And when at last I’ll hear the call, I know I’ll say ‘twas worth it all”; Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.  ~ C.T. Studd
