January Joy

Today, many Christians suffer from spiritual discouragement and depression.  These attitudes are often caused by weakness in our spiritual lives.  We have gaps where we are spiritually weak leaving us vulnerable to attack.  Christians find themselves weak and giving in to thoughts, actions, and habits that are not pleasing to God.

Are you a spiritually discouraged Christian?  Do you need to be strengthened?  We’ve heard the scripture, “The joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).  What happened which caused this to be spoken?  What were some actions and attitudes recorded in the Book of Nehemiah which can help us understand we can be strengthened?

The book of Nehemiah in the Old Testament records how Nehemiah led the people to rebuild the walls around their city.  They took care of their physical surrounding.  However, they found themselves spiritually depressed and discouraged.  Nehemiah and other spiritual leaders recognized the people also needed spiritual strengthening.  The leaders helped all to overcome spiritual depression and discouragement.  The leaders taught the people the following concepts:

  • Attentively hear God’s Word
  • Respect and reverence God’s Word
  • Acknowledge the G.A.P. Filling God – God’s Greatness, Authority, and Power
  • Humble one’s spirit to receive God’s Word with understanding

Nehemiah instructed the people to no longer be depressed or discouraged.  He basically said depression and discouragement are not necessary because God is in charge.  Replace your depression and discouragement with gladness in God.  The gladness God provides creates the spiritual strengthening necessary to protect you from spiritual danger or injury.

Take the time to read the book of Nehemiah, especially Chapter 8.  Find there the keys to being strengthened by joy.  You’ll find strength comes when you hear, receive, and understand God’s Word while putting your complete hope and trust in acknowledgement of the GAP God – God’s Greatness, Authority, and Power.  Then you will find your spiritual life Strengthened by Joy

Knowing the GAP God will bring the Joy of the Lord which will be your Strength!  You will have the GAP God to turn you away from spiritual depression and discouragement.
