How near does God feel to you? Does it feel like He’s left you? Though you know in your mind and the scripture that says He will never leave you nor forsake you; the anxiety in your mind and inner life speaks louder than the beloved verse.
Your “distant feeling” is not uncommon. Jesus’ disciples were grieving the distance there was going to be between them and Jesus. In John 16, the future was explained and Jesus was “going away”. He would be at a distance. Just thinking that through caused the disciples to be very sad.
Do you feel sad today? Are you missing some joy because God seems to be at a distance? How did Jesus respond to the despair of the disciples? We can learn from Jesus’ teaching. The message Jesus told his disciples is a message we can hear today and find help for our sadness.
John 16:7 – “It is good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.”
Jesus always has something better. He wanted His disciples to trust Him. Had the disciples not seen over the last few years, Jesus always had the best solution for their dilemma. Could they believe Jesus going away would ultimately bring them the most fulfillment and help when they would no longer see Jesus face to face.
You’ve never seen Jesus face to face, yet sometimes you may feel sad because God seems distant. The answer Jesus gave to his disciples for their sadness was that Jesus would send the Holy Spirit who would speak on His behalf. The Advocate whom Jesus would send would always declare everything Jesus had told them. He would bring everything back to their mind and understanding. The conclusion was the Spirit would be better than the physical form of Jesus.
Today you can do these three things when you feel distant. Doing these three things will enable the Spirit of God who Jesus would send to calm your anxiety and speak His love and peace to you.
- Lean-in to God’s love – Incline your mind to consider the fact that Jesus came to earth. He was born as a man, lived a sinless, perfect life. Then He died to pay the penalty for your sins and rose forever by the Spirit of God. Jesus sent the same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus to life to give you life and joy and vibrance. The Holy Spirit is like God being with you forever. He is your personal companion.
- Meditate on John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Think about God’s promise to be with you forever. Glow in the radiance of God’s love for you. Bask in the treasure of Christ Jesus and think deeply about His care and love for you.
- Take to heart the knowledge – God’s “good” to me – Remember you were dead, without life, hopeless in this world. Then, God considered it “good” to send Jesus to redeem you and make you his own. Believe you can trust God and His plan. Even when you feel distant and it grieves you. It grieved the disciples before you also that Jesus was going away. When you feel distant, remember the fact, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be with you forever.
Make God your personal God today. Immerse yourself in His Love, on His Gift, and on His nearness to you. When you do this, you will see God is very near to you.
